Gretchen Lord LCSW

We come together in a rush of pheromones but we achieve love through continuing conversation. It's the hardest relationship. You have to work on it, and there's nothing greater than when you can make it work. Together we will disentangle misunderstandings and explore how you and your partner fight and how you want to talk.

Most fights are really protests over emotional disconnection. Underneath all the distress, partners are asking each other, "Can I count on you, depend on you? Are you there for me? Will you respond to me when I need you? Do you need me, rely on me?" Anger, criticism and demands are really cries to our partners, calls to draw our loved ones back in emotionally and reestablish a sense of connection. When our loved one is emotionally unavailable or unresponsive we face being out in the cold, alone and helpless. We are filled with emotions - anger, sadness, hurt and fear. We all live out the drama of connection and disconnection. Now we can do it with understanding. I offer emotionally focused couples therapy. I will instruct you on how to shape these moments to create a secure and lasting bond.

The underlying assumption to this approach is that couples recognize that they are emotionally attached to and dependent on their partner in much the same way that a child is on a parent for nurturing, soothing and protection. This method focuses on creating and strengthening the emotional bond between partners by identifying and transforming the key moments that foster an adult loving relationship: being open, attuned, and responsive to one another.

Sometimes our relationships no longer work and if ultimately separation is better for a couple ... then by entering into couples therapy I will help you individually and/or together to figure out a way forward. My job is to help guide and support you in navigating the ups and downs of reaching consensus with your mate; each partner will be coached in how to genuinely listen and be heard - uninterrupted.
